Excursions: No excursions for a while
Reading and Writing: We are finishing our books this week as we discuss themes in their work. Students are also revising literary essays.
Our next unit will explore the idea of our complicated relationship with immigrants in the USA. It will not be an attempt to provide any answers so much as a look into the lives of different cultures (students choose books for a book study) and a chance to read some nonfiction work about the topic (historical and articles). In the coming days, I will be asking students to investigate their own family history as well.
Math: This week we're starting our 5th unit: geometry. The week will start off with a review of 6th grade topics including finding the area of composite 2-D shapes and shapes on a coordinate plane. Your students will have plenty of time to practice online and independently on Monday and Tuesday. For the rest of the week we'll focus on writing equations and finding missing angles in complementary, supplementary, adjacent, and vertical angles. Some great IXL skills include W.11 and W.12
I also want to make another positive plug for free after school tutoring that is happening after school on Tuesday and Thursdays until 4:30 PM in the MS commons. Students are able to go through their math homework in small groups with the help of the Americorps volunteer, Mr. Cogorno, who is in my classroom. I have received great feedback and already seen students make progress who have started going to tutoring. At the beginning of a new unit is an especially great time to get some individual support and stay caught up =)
EfS: Students will be starting a new unit around defining what good means in consumer good by designing a new snack concept.
Sports: Basketball wraps up this week.
Science: Students are starting their science fair projects. They should be developing a testable question.
Extra: We want to thank everybody that contributed to the Apex Run.
Thanks,
7th Grade Team
